All students are to complete course content online synchronously. (OLSYN) This course is an advanced survey of Latin
American literature as viewed through
the lens of the portrayal, creation, and
possible destruction of new worlds. From
the poetic creations of the modernistas and
the Vanguardia to the narrative worlds of
authors like Jorge Luis Borges, María Luisa
Bombal, Juan Rulfo, Alejo Carpentier,
Julio Cortázar, and Maricela Guerrero;
students will gain a greater appreciation
of the rhetorical foundations and historical,
cultural, political and aesthetic connections
that define Spanish American literary
production in the 20th and 21st centuries. In
addition to visits to well-known worlds like
García Márquez’s Macondo and Borges’
labyrinths, students will explore the limits
of literary creation in a selection of works
from the current decade.
